Human C-Reactive Protein (hCRP) is a calcium-dependent ligand-binding plasma protein, mainly produced by the liver. CRP concentration is a very useful nonspecific biochemical marker of inflammation. In healthy young adult volunteer donors, the median concentration of CRP in blood is 0.8 mg/L, however, during acute-phase inflammation, values may increase to more than 500 mg/L. High plasma concentration of CRP is also associated with increased risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and other vascular diseases.
